What Is A Buttercream Board?

This Baby Frankenstein Buttercream Board is sure to be a monster hit…so let's get started!
What You'll Need for Your Buttercream Frosting Board
Large Board:
A large board acts as the canvas for your buttercream masterpiece. The expansive surface allows for the full portrayal of the Baby Frankenstein face, with ample space for the surrounding decorative elements like cookies and pretzels. You can use a cookie sheet, a flat serving platter or tray or even a large cutting board. Make sure your board is large enough to ensure that the dessert presentation is not only visually appealing but also serves multiple guests.
Tip 1A (for the face):
The Tip 1A is a large round piping tip, ideal for creating broad and even lines. For the Baby Frankenstein Board, this tip is instrumental in shaping the face's base layer. Its wide opening ensures an even distribution of buttercream, perfect for filling large areas like Frankenstein's face, and can also be used in other dessert projects for tasks like piping large rosettes or creating the base for a buttercream flower. It's also the same tip we used when we made the Ghost Cupcakes.
Tip 2D (large star tip for hair):
The Tip 2D is a large star-shaped piping tip. When piping with this tip, it produces a textured, star-like pattern, which is why it's perfect for Frankenstein's iconic hair. The ridged effect gives the hair a more distinct and stylized appearance, replicating the look of thick, chunky hair strands. Beyond our spooky creation, the Tip 2D is popularly used for piping large flowers, rosettes, and other decorative patterns on cakes and cupcakes.
3 Piping Bags:
Piping bags are essential tools in cake and pastry decoration, allowing for precision and control when applying frosting or other fillings. In the Baby Frankenstein recipe, three bags are needed to manage the different frosting colors and tips efficiently. Instead of constantly swapping out colors or tips, having multiple bags prepped saves time and ensures each part of the design is executed smoothly. Piping bags are versatile and can be utilized in countless other baking projects, from filling doughnuts to piping meringue.
Offset Spatula:
The offset spatula is a baker's best friend when it comes to achieving smooth and even surfaces. Its angled design allows for optimal hand positioning, ensuring you don't disturb the frosting while spreading. For the Baby Frankenstein Board, it's instrumental in smoothing out the face's buttercream after it's piped, giving it a polished look. This spatula is also invaluable for tasks like spreading batter in pans, frosting cakes, and lifting delicate cookies.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups buttercream frosting
- 2 cups mini pretzels
- 2 cups pretzel sticks
- 2 dozen chocolate sandwich cookies
- 1 dozen vanilla sandwich cookies
- 1 dozen mini chocolate sandwich cookies
- Black Gel Food Color
- Leaf Green Gel Food Color
Instructions:
First, mix the white frosting with the Leaf Green Gel Food Color to achieve a vibrant green shade.
Fill one piping bag fitted with the Tip 1A with the green frosting. This will be used for the face of our Baby Frankenstein.
Begin by drawing the outline of the face on your large board.
Fill in the face, making sure to maintain consistent pressure to achieve an even spread. Remember to hover the piping bag slightly above the board so the frosting gently falls, giving it a smooth appearance.
Use the offset spatula to gently smooth out the frosting for a neat finish.
Now, take some of the green frosting and add Black Gel Food Color. This will be used for Frankenstein's iconic black hair.
Transfer the black frosting into a new piping bag fitted with the Tip 2D.
Carefully pipe on the hair. Again, ensure you're slightly above the board so as not to disturb the green frosting.
Now for the eyes! Split two vanilla sandwich cookies and place them on the face.
Add mini chocolate sandwich cookies in the center of the vanilla cookies to create the pupils.
For the finishing touches, transfer the remaining black frosting into a third piping bag without any tip. Snip a small opening at the end.
Delicately pipe on the mouth and the characteristic stitches/scars.
Now, it's time for the border! Layer the cookies and pretzels around the Frankenstein face.
Continue adding cookies and pretzels until you're happy wth the way your dessert board looks and they dippers are placed in a way that will make them easy to grab and dip!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Can I use store-bought frosting?
You can technically do whatever you want, but since it's quick and easy to make buttercream frosting, I would go with homemade frosting. It tastes soooo much better than store-bought frosting. If you do decide to go with store-bought, just ensure it's thick enough for piping. If it’s too thin, you can thicken it by adding some powdered sugar.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes, you can prepare the Frankenstein face a day in advance. However, don't add the cookies and pretzels until just before serving to keep them crunchy.
How do I store leftovers?
Cover the board with plastic wrap or transfer to an airtight container. Store in a cool place or refrigerate.
Can I use different cookies or snacks for the border?
Definitely! Be creative and use what you have on hand or your favorite treats.
I don't have gel food colors. Can I use liquid?
Gel food colors are more vibrant and won’t thin out your frosting, but if you only have liquid, start with a small amount and adjust accordingly.
