Halloween is a time for spooky surprises and delightful treats, and what better way to celebrate than with a Bat Buttercream Board! This board combines the fun of Halloween-themed decor with the deliciousness of an array of desserts.
Perfect for a party, family get-together, or even just a festive night at home. Get ready to impress your guests with this creepy-cute dessert display!
What Is A Buttercream Board?
If you’ve never heard of a Buttercream Board, it’s basically a dessert charcuterie board that features delicious buttercream frosting along with an array of sweet treats like chocolate chips, cookies, marshmallows and your favorite candy along with salty snacks like pretzel sticks and pretzel chips.
This halloween dessert board features a lavender bat so it's definitely more cute than scary! It's perfect for a Halloween party, for enjoying with your family on Halloween night as you pass out Halloween candy and I even think it would be amazing for a movie night or birthday party with a Hotel Transylvania theme!
While I personally think you can never go wrong with homemade American buttercream frosting, you can totally use store-bought frosting for this recipe.
What you'll Need for your Buttercream Frosting Board
Square Serving Tray:
The square serving tray acts as the base and display platform for your dessert creations. Its symmetrical shape offers a modern and organized look, allowing for structured placement of desserts. Beyond dessert boards, it can be used to serve appetizers, cheeses, or even as a base for decorative centerpieces.
Round Piping Tip:
A round piping tip is essential for achieving precise and uniform designs when decorating with icing or other soft mixtures. Its rounded opening allows for smooth flow, perfect for creating dots, lines, or even written messages on cakes and pastries. With different sizes available, it's versatile enough for detailed work or filling larger areas.
Disposable Decorating Bags or Pastry Bags:
These decorating bags are convenient tools for any baking enthusiast. Being disposable, they offer a hassle-free cleanup after a decorating session.
They're durable enough to hold and dispense thick frostings, and with their flexibility, decorators can easily control the flow. They can be used with various tips for different decorating techniques, making them perfect for everything from cupcakes to intricate cake designs.
Parchment Paper Sheet:
Parchment paper is a baker's best friend. It offers a non-stick surface, ideal for baking cookies, pastries, or even as a liner for cake pans.
For our Bat Buttercream Board, it's used to trace and transfer designs, ensuring precision. Another advantage is its heat resistance, making it suitable for oven use. Beyond baking, it can be used for rolling out doughs or even for wrapping food items.
Offset Spatula:
The offset spatula is a must-have tool for achieving smooth finishes on cakes, brownies, and other pastries. Its angled design allows for precision, helping decorators spread and smooth icing without their hand getting in the way.
The flat, flexible blade can also assist in lifting delicate items like cookies or transferring intricate decorations. In a pinch, it can even be used for cutting or serving slices of soft cakes or brownies. I prefer to use a small offset spatula as I feel like it gives me more control, but you can use whatever size you want.

Bat Frosting Board Ingredients:
- 2 cups Homemade Buttercream Frosting OR Wilton Creamy Decorator Icing
- Purple Food Coloring
- 2 Large Candy Eyes
- Black Wilton Sparkle Gel
- 3/4 cup Mini Marshmallows
- 4 Hostess Bundt Cakes
- 4 Brownie Bites
- 2 Mini Cupcakes
- 2 Mini Donuts
- 8 Chocolate Chip Cookies
- 2 Little Debbie Cosmic Brownies
- 4 OREO Cookies
- 12 Mini OREO Cookies
- 6 Mini Golden OREO Cookies
- 6 Mini Chocolate Chip Cookies
- 10 Mini Chocolate Pretzels
- 1/2 Cup Gummy Pumpkins
- 8 Striped Marshmallows
- 6 Sour Worms
Instructions:
In a large bowl, add purple food coloring to you your vanilla buttercream frosting and mix until the desired color is achieved. I like to use an electric mixer (it can be a hand mixer or a stand mixer), but I find that an electric mixer gives much more uniform color.
Fit a decorating bag with a round piping tip and fill with the icing.
If you want a template, print out this bat, cut out the shape, and trace onto parchment paper. Place this in the center of your serving board.
Trace the bat shape with icing. If you're confident in your artistic abilities, feel free to freehand!
Fill the entire bat shape with the icing, then smooth out the surface using an offset spatula. Make any necessary touch-ups to the bat's shape.
For the face, you'll want to start by adding the candy eyes.
Next, draw a tiny mouth using the Black Wilton Sparkle Gel then fashion two fangs from a mini marshmallow, placing them just under the mouth.
Frame your bat with mini marshmallows to give it a distinct outline.
Place brownie bites to the top right and bottom left corners of the board. Place mini bundt cakes in the opposite corners: top left and bottom right.
Fill the remaining open space with an assortment of cookies, mini cupcakes, and brownies.
Any extra empty spots on the board can be filled with mini cookies, gummy pumpkins, marshmallows, and sour worms.
Once your board is complete, serve with spoons and plates for guests to enjoy!
NOTES: I highly recommend making and eating the Bat Frosting Board on the same day for the best experience.
Benefits of a Buttercream Board
A buttercream board, like this Cute Bat Buttercream Board, is not just a delightful treat to the eyes and taste buds, but it also comes with several inherent benefits that make it an excellent choice for gatherings and festive occasions:
- Versatility in Presentation: One of the significant advantages of a buttercream board is the ability to customize and tailor it according to the event's theme. From Halloween to birthdays, it can be adapted to fit any occasion with the right colors and decorations.
- Interactive Experience: Unlike traditional cakes or desserts that are served pre-sliced or in individual portions, a buttercream board offers an interactive experience. Guests can pick and choose their favorite treats, making it a fun and engaging dessert option.
- Variety of Flavors: A buttercream board typically comprises an assortment of desserts. This variety ensures that there's something for everyone, catering to different taste preferences.
- Space-Efficient: Since everything is spread out on a flat tray, it doesn't occupy as much vertical space as tiered cakes or dessert stands. This can be especially useful if table space is limited.
- Easy to Assemble: I'm all about easy recipes and despite looking elaborate, a buttercream board is relatively easy to put together. With pre-made treats and some creative arranging, even beginners can create a stunning display.
- Perfect for Sharing: The board design encourages communal eating. It fosters a sense of community as everyone gathers around to share from the same platter, making it perfect for family gatherings or parties.
- Cost-Effective: Instead of investing in a lavish cake or multiple desserts, a buttercream board can be a cost-effective solution. Many of the ingredients can be store-bought or made in bulk, potentially saving on expenses.
- Visual Appeal: The aesthetic value of a well-decorated buttercream board cannot be overstated. Its vibrant colors, diverse textures, and artful arrangement make it an instant centerpiece for any event.
A buttercream board is not just a dessert but an experience in itself. It's a testament to the idea that food is not just about taste but also about presentation, variety, and shared joy. Whether you're a seasoned baker or someone looking for a novel dessert idea, a buttercream board might just be the perfect addition to your next event.
FAQs {Frequently Asked Questions}
Can I use other types of desserts on my Halloween board?
Absolutely! Feel free to get creative and use any of your favorite festive treats.
How long does the board last once prepared?
It's best enjoyed on the same day it's prepared. However, you could pipe the frosting onto the board and refrigerate it and add the other goodies the day of.
Can I use other colors instead of purple for the bat?
Yes, you can customize the bat's color to your liking, though purple gives it a fun not-too-spooky touch.
What if I don't have a decorator's bag for the icing?
You can use a ziplock bag and snip one corner to use as a makeshift piping bag. It should do the trick for this project.
I don't have a square serving tray. What could I use instead?
If you don't have a square serving tray, don't worry! There are plenty of alternatives that can work just as well. Basically any clean, food-friendly flat surface will work, but here are a few specific suggestions:
- Rectangle Serving Tray: While it's a different shape, the concept remains the same. The additional length might even allow for a more elaborate spread of treats.
- Round Platter: A round platter or large plate can be a suitable replacement. While the arrangement might differ due to the shape, it can still be very visually appealing.
- Cutting Board: A large, flat cutting board, especially wooden ones, can give a rustic look to your dessert presentation.
- Baking Sheet: A clean, flat baking sheet or cookie tray can also do the trick, especially if you're going for a more casual presentation.
- Tile or Slab: A clean, large ceramic tile or marble slab can be very chic and modern, giving a unique touch to your dessert spread.
Remember, the key is to work with what you have and get creative. The primary goal is to create a delightful display of desserts for everyone to enjoy, regardless of the specific tray or board you use.
We hope this Bat Buttercream Board brings a smile (and maybe a little scare!) to your Halloween festivities. Happy Haunting! 🦇🎃
