I'm so excited to bring you another fun keto breakfast recipe. This is the best keto donuts recipe! If you love chocolate glazed donuts, you're going to love this keto chocolate glazed donuts recipe!

It's no secret that I love donuts! They might be my favorite food of all time.
Early on in our marriage, my husband and I would go on a Saturday morning date every week to get Krispy Kreme donuts. And we've passed that love of donuts onto our kids because it seems like they are regularly asking us to swing by Dunkin Donuts on the way to church on Sunday. (We don't have a Krispy Kreme close to us anymore.)
And it's not a coincidence that my favorite casual shirt is this “Will Run For Donuts” tank which is pretty much an accurate representation of the reason I run. Honestly, there's nothing like a tasty donut at the end of a workout.

When I made the switch to a low carb lifestyle, I thought donuts were a thing of the past. I ate lots and lots of eggs for breakfast, but eventually, my sweet tooth took over.
I started searching for low carb donuts. I tried my local grocery store, a well-known keto bakery, and even our local donut shop. I found sugar-free donuts that had lots of carbs and I found gluten-free donuts that had lots of sugar but nobody had low-carb donuts that were good…or if they were good, they had a bajillion carbs in them or used a sweetener that I prefer to not use.
Next, I started looking for delicious keto donut recipes. It seemed like the pefect low carb donut recipe was elusive. I found quite a few low carb donut recipes, but they just didn't do it for me.
I'm pretty fussy when it comes to low-carb sweeteners and so-called keto-friendly ingredients. Many of them are highly processed and end up spiking my blood sugar or causing an insulin response. And so if it had a keto sweetener that I didn't approve of, I didn't even bother trying the recipe.
I'm happy to say that after a whole lot of trial and error, this keto donut recipe came about. These chocolate cake donuts only have 4 net carbs each and taste like traditional donuts!
These chocolate donuts are a fun treat and you'll be surprised at how easy they are to make!

Keto Chocolate Donuts Ingredients:

- 1/3 cup coconut flour
- 1/3 cup Swerve Sweetener
- 3 tbsp. cocoa powder
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 4 large eggs
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup brewed coffee (Make sure the coffee is not hot. You can use room temperature or even cool coffee)
- 2 Tbsp. water
Coffee intensifies the flavor of the chocolate which is why I've included it in this recipe. You don't have to use coffee though. You can replace the 1/4 cup of coffee with water if you prefer.
Keto Chocolate Glaze Ingredients:
- 2/3 cup sugar-free chocolate chips (I use these)
- ¼ tsp. vanilla extract
- 3 Tbsp. Swerve Sweetener
- 1 Tbsp. MCT Oil or Coconut Oil
How To Make Keto Donuts
Preheat the oven to 325F and grease a donut pan if needed. You can use cooking spray or butter to grease your pan.
I use this donut pan and they slide right out with no greasing required. I've also been experimenting lately with this silcone pan and am a big fan.
In a large bowl, mix together the dry ingredients and stir until well combined.

Next stir in the eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Then stir in the coffee and water until well combined.

Divide the batter and use a piping bag to pipe the donut batter into your donut pan. You can try spooning the batter into the pans, but I find that to be quite messy and time-consuming. These piping bags make it super simple and they don't make a mess.
Bake 16 to 20 minutes or until the donuts are firm to the touch. Remove and let them cool in the pan for 5 to 10 minutes.

Then flip the pan and allow to finish cooling on a wire rack.

How To Make Keto Chocolate Glaze
In a small bowl, mix chocolate chips and coconut oil. (If you're using MCT oil, melt the chocolate chips first and then add the MCT oil when you add the vanilla and swerve.)
Microwave in 30-second increments until chocolate chips are melted. Mix well then add in vanilla extract and swerve sweetener and whisk together.

Dip the tops of each donut into the glaze and place them on a wire rack until the glaze hardens.

I found the chocolate firmed up in about 30 minutes. You can also put them in the refrigerator if you want them to set more quickly.
Or if you're impatient like me, you can eat this tasty treat while it's still gooey and dripping. It will make a total mess, but you might just find it was worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between keto doughnuts and keto donuts?
This is not actually a question anyone asks besides me. I love donuts and post about them regularly, but get stressed out every time I write a blog post because I'm not sure if I should be calling it a donut or a doughnut. If anyone knows what the definitive answer is…please let me know!!!
Can I use a different type of sugar substitute instead of Swerve Sweetener in the recipe?
Yes, you can use a different sugar substitute, but you just want to make sure it's powdered, not granulated. I like Swerve because it's a blend of erythritol and monk fruit sweetener.
I know some people are sensitive to certain sweeteners, so if you need to use a different sweetener, feel free. Keep in mind that the sweetness level may vary depending on the sweetener you use, so adjust accordingly. Also, always taste your batter before you bake it because if you need to add more sweetener you can still do it.
What can I substitute for coconut flour? Can I use almond flour instead?
While it is possible to substitute almond flour for coconut flour, they do not have a 1:1 substitution ratio because they absorb liquid differently. If you want to use almond flour, you'll typically need to use about 4 times the amount of coconut flour called for in the recipe. This can also impact the texture of your donuts so be warned.
I typically prefer almond flour over coconut flour in recipes, but when I tried making almond flour donuts they were really dry and dense.
I don't have a donut pan, can I still make these keto donuts?
Sure! I'm all about working with what you have, but if you plan to make these frequently, you may want to invest in a donut mold down the road.
For now, you can use a muffin pan, but keep in mind that the baking time may vary as the shape and size of your muffins will be different from a donut.
You can also try forming the donuts by hand and place them on a parchment paper covered baking sheet, though this may be a bit more labor-intensive.
I don't drink coffee. Can I replace it with something else or skip it entirely?
Yep. You sure can! If you're not a coffee fan or can't consume it for any reason, you can simply replace the coffee in the recipe with water. The coffee is used to enhance the chocolate flavor but the donuts will still be delicious without it.
Can I use regular chocolate chips instead of sugar-free chocolate chips for the glaze?
While technically you can do whatever you want, I don't recommend using regular chocolate chips instead of sugar free chocolate chips. If you're going to make keto donuts, make keto donuts. If you don't care about the sugar, I'd make this donut recipe instead.
