There's no denying that Fall is here. The leaves are changing colors, the air has a crispness to it, and we're all craving pumpkin spice lattes! This season can be fun and festive, but there's always room for some sweet treats. If you are looking for an easy no-bake treat I've got just the thing: Acorn Oreo Cake Balls.

Acorn Shaped Oreo Cake Balls are perfect for this season. Plus, the best part about this recipe is that it's a simple no-bake dessert made with crushed-up Oreo cookies, cream cheese, and chocolate. Yum, right?
As you know, I'm all about no-bake recipes and easy recipes, which in my opinion makes this the perfect treat for fall!
These Oreo Cake Balls are so much fun to make because you get to shape them into little acorns. How cute, huh? You can decorate them any way you want!
These Acorn Oreo Balls are a lot of fun to create. Since they're so simple to prepare, you can make a batch to serve at a fall festival or fall baby shower. Heck, you can even serve them as a Thanksgiving Day appetizer. I mean, we all know that OREOS are where it's at!
The Difference Between Oreo Cake Balls and Oreo Truffles
Some people might call these Oreo Truffles, some people call them Oreo Cake Balls. And some people are very opinionated about the difference.
The difference between truffles and these cake balls is the filling. That is it! A truffle filling consists of a warmed heavy cream and chocolate base that has been cooled. And a cake ball filling typically consists of cake crumbs mixed with chocolate on the inside.
Technically, these are neither since they consist of Oreos mixed with cream cheese.
Using a ganache base or a cake mix base allows you to store your truffles or cake balls at room temperature, whereas a cream cheese base mixture needs to be in the fridge. Food safety 101 right there.
And while there is technically a difference between cake balls and truffles, since these aren't technically either one, people use Oreo Cake Balls and Oreo Truffles interchangeably and I'm going to do the same! 🙂
How To Make Acorn Oreo Cake Balls

Well, we already established that they are easy, no-bake, and fun to make.
My favorite part is crushing the cookies; now some people will put them in the food processor but not me…oh no, I want to smash them into Oreo crumbs with a rolling pin.
Plus, I don't have to clean the food processor, which is a win-win for me!
Pro-Tip: If you decide to crush them yourself (or have your kids crush the cookies for you), you'll need to make sure your cookie crumbs are super fine. If you don't have fine crumbs, you may end up with some weird shapes and some big chunky bites.
Once you have your crushed cookies, the rest is easy peasy. You'll just up your ingredients, shape, freeze, decorate, then enjoy. {Don't worry…I'll break it down step by step}

Ingredients Needed for Acorn Shaped Oreo Cake Balls
Directions To Make Acorn Oreo Cake Balls
Place Oreos in a Ziploc bag with the air squeezed out. Using a rolling pin, crush to fine dust. {If you have young kids, chances are good that they'll love doing this!}
Next, you'll want to combine your Oreo cookies with your brick of cream cheese.
You'll want to use room temperature cream cheese for this. If your cream cheese has been sitting in the fridge, you'll want to put it in a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 15-25 seconds.
Mix with work into Oreo dust.
Once combined, take about a tablespoon of mix and roll into an oval shape, flattening one side. I think a small cookie scoop is the easiest way for making sure that you can make all of your small balls the same size.
Continue until all of the mix is shaped. Place on a prepared baking sheet (I usually use a silicone baking mat, parchment paper or wax paper for this) in a single layer and place in freezer for a few hours or overnight.

Once frozen, melt chocolate in 30-second increments, stirring after each.
Dip the broken side of the pretzel into melted chocolate and insert it into the flattened side of the oval. Let Dry.

Then dip balls into chocolate, covering entirely but leave pretzel stem exposed.

Shake off any extra and sprinkle jimmies around the top to give an acorn appearance. If you have excess chocolate that detracts from the acorn shape, feel free to trim it off with a pair of kitchen shears.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Do You Store Acorn Oreo Cake Balls
Since these contain cream cheese, you'll want to store these in the fridge. The Oreo Balls will stay fresh for 3-4 weeks in an airtight container or ZIP lock baggie inside your refrigerator.
Can You Freeze Oreo Cake Balls?
Yes, you can freeze the Oreo Balls for 3-4 months. To do so, place them in an airtight container, then freeze. Then, when ready to serve, thaw them out & let them sit at room temperature before eating or giving as gifts.
These are the perfect make-ahead recipe for holiday parties because you can freeze them until ready to serve.
Can I melt chocolate chips for the candy coating?
Yep. You can use dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate or milk chocolate chips or you can use almond bark for the coating. You can pretty much use any type of candy melts, chocolate bark, or candy wafers for this. Just remember that if you use a chocolate that is not designed to be a chocolate coating, you may need to add a small amount of vegetable oil or coconut oil to your melted chocolate so that it isn't clumpy.
If you were making regular oreo cookie balls or oreo cake pops, I'd also tell you that using white chocolate chips or white baking chocolate to coat your oreo cream cheese balls or even to use as a white chocolate drizzle over regular chocolate is absolutely delicious, but it would totally ruin the vibe of these acorn oreo cake balls.
What Is The Best Way To Melt Chocolate For Dipping
The easiest method is to melt the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl for 30 seconds at a time, stirring each time until it is smooth. Just make sure the chocolate isn't too hot when you dip the Oreo Cake Balls in. You may also melt the milk chocolate in a double boiler and stir till it's smooth and melted.
How To Dip the Oreo Cake Balls Into the Chocolate?
The best way is to freeze your cookie ballsfor 15-20 minutes before dipping. Then pick up your chilled balls with a fork or candy scoop and dip them into the chocolate.
Can You Make Acorn Oreo Cake Balls Without Cream Cheese?
You sure can. Some people don't like cream cheese, so here are some alternative ideas to use:
- Peanut butter
- Chocolate frosting
- Marshmallow fluff
- Chocolate Ganache
- Hazelnut spread
Tips
- To ensure that all of the balls are roughly the same size, scoop them with a cookie scoop before rolling them into acorn shaped.
- Instead of the Ziploc and rolling pin- yes, you can use your food processor.
- Before the chocolate is totally hard, sprinkle the jimmies on. If you're not going for an acorn look then you can add candy canes, mini chocolate chips, nuts, or sugar for a finishing touch.
