Directions To Make Easy Instant Pot Apple Butter
First step is to core and slice apples. You don't need to peel the apples. This apple butter recipe does not require the apples to be peeled, unlike many other apple butters.
In fact, the peels are required to properly thicken the apple butter. The apple peel contains pectins which will help to create a thicker apple butter.

Then add the water to the instant pot.

Set the Instant Pot vent to sealing, use the manual setting and adjust the time to 15 minutes at high pressure.
When finished, let the natural pressure release do its thing for 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes, turn the dial to the VENT position and let the remaining steam release.
Remove lid.
Add remaining ingredients and blend together with an immersion blender or pour into a regular blender.
If your apple butter is too runny, simply put it back into the Instant Pot and use the sauté setting. Sauté until it has thickened up.
How should I store my apple butter?
You'll want to store your apple butter in an airtight container. Mason jars are my favorite airtight containers. If you're planning on giving apple butter as gifts, there are some super cute jars on Amazon. I love these little 4 oz jars and these decorative 12 oz jars.
How long does apple butter last?
You can refrigerate for up to 3 weeks or freeze up to 6 months.
How thick should my apple butter be?
Place a spoonful of apple butter on a small dish or saucer and put it in the freezer for 5-10 minutes to check its thickness. To test for thickness, run your finger through the frozen apple butter.
If you like your apple butter runny, let it come to room temperature before serving. If you want to thicken the apple butter more, you can either saute it as mentioned above or set the Instant Pot to Slow Cooking and cook for 2-3 hours with the lid off before repeating the freezing thickness test.
What type of apples should I use for apple butter?
They type of apple you use is super important when it comes to apple butter. Our favorite apples to use are gala apples, Mcintosh apples, red delicious apples, golden delicious apples or Honey Crisp apples. Honestly, I think using a variety of apples makes for the best apple butter. I like to use mostly sweet apples with a few tart apples.
Granny Smith apples are excellent for baking; however, they're not the best apples for apple butter. If you want to throw one or two in with some honeycrisp apples or gala apples, you'd be fine, but definitely don't use Granny Smith apples by themself.
I'm out of brown sugar. What can I use instead?
You could use white sugar, but you'd need to add molasses as well so that the flavor doesn't change dramatically. You could probably use maple syrup without it affecting the flavor too much, but if you have molasses, I recommend adding that along with the maple syrup. You could also experiment with coconut sugar or agave nectar.
Can I use cinnamon sticks instead of ground cinnamon?
Ground cinnamon has a much stronger cinnamon flavor than cinnamon sticks. If you want to add a few cinnamon sticks to your pressure cooker while your apples are cooking, you can do that, but just make sure to remove them from your cooked apples before you add the other ingredients and blend.
I like sweet apple butter. Can I add more sugar?
The amount of sugar you'll need to add will depend on the type of apples you use. Sweeter apples make for sweeter apple butter. You can use less added sugar if you use sweeter apples!
Can I use other spices in this recipe?
You sure can. Feel free to replace your cinnamon with apple pie spice mix or even pumpkin pie spice mix. If you like nutmeg, feel free to add that. If cardamom is your jam, add a touch of that!
I am going to try making caramel apple butter by adding some homemade dulce de leche (which I also make in my Instant Pot) to my apple butter and mixing well!
Can I double this recipe?
Yep. If you're planning on making apple butter as gifts, I'd use 6 pounds of apples instead of 3.
Can I use apple butter instead of butter?
Apple butter is made from real apples. It can be substituted for vegetable oil and butter if desired, much like applesauce. It adds a rich depth of flavor to dishes.
How is apple butter different than applesauce?
The distinction between applesauce and apple butter is fundamental. Apple butter is cooked longer. As a result, it becomes thick and caramelized with more flavor than applesauce. Applesauce is frequently consumed alone, whereas apple butter is more commonly served as a condiment.

Tips
To make smooth apple butter, look for apples that are sweet and soft, rather than tart and crunchy.
