This is a classic deviled eggs recipe, but I've included some optional ideas in the FAQs if you want to mix up the flavors a little bit.
To get started, you're going to need to hard boil some eggs. Keep in mind that perfect deviled eggs start with perfect hard-boiled eggs.
While you can boil eggs on the stove, I've found that the easiest way is to use your Instant Pot or your Air Fryer. (You can find Instant Pot instructions here and the Air Fryer instructions here).
Football Deviled Eggs Ingredients
- 6 hard boiled eggs
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- green onions
If you're using freshly made hard boiled eggs, you'll want to make sure they've had plenty of time in ice water after they're done cooking. My rule of thumb is to keep changing out the water or adding ice til you still have cold water after a few minutes. You don't your egg to still be even a little bit warm when you start making the deviled eggs mixture.
1. Start by cutting your hard boiled eggs in half length-wise.
2. Remove the yellow yolks and place them in a small bowl.
3. Add mayonnaise, mustard, salt and paprika to the egg yolks. Mash yolks with other ingredients until nice and smooth.
4. Place egg white halves on a plate or serving platter.
5. Now spoon 1 tablespoon of your egg yolk mixture into the center of each your egg halves. If you're fancy and if your deviled egg mixture is a smooth mixture, you can use a pastry bag to pipe yolk mixture into the center of the deviled egg.
6. Use your green onions to create football laces on the top of the egg.
Serve on a football-themed platter or on a grassy bed made to look like a football field. I used this platter for these eggs.
FAQS {Frequently Asked Questions}
Can I add sweet pickle juice, dill pickle juice, or pickle relish, to these deviled eggs?
Yes! I know that some people think that pickle flavoring is required to make the best deviled egg recipes, but I hate pickles, so I never add them to recipes that I love. 🙂
Can I use miracle whip instead of mayonnaise?
Yep. Feel free to use 1/4 cup miracle whip instead of mayonnaise. My dad comes from a mayonnaise only family and my mom comes from a miracle whip family so this was the age-old debate as I was growing up. But if you want my honest opinion, mayonnaise is soooo much better than Miracle Whip.
I like spicy deviled eggs? What can I add to make them spicier?
You can add hot sauce to the egg yolk mixture to make your deviled eggs spicier.
What kind of mustard should I use?
You can use whatever mustard you like just know that this will change the flavor. I have used spicy mustard, dijon mustard and plain yellow mustard.
What else can I add to these to make this the best deviled eggs recipe?
Honestly, taste is a subjective thing, but you can add or swap a variety of ingredients to make these taste the way you want them to. You can sub sour cream for mayo. Add lemon juice to give them a little zing. Add black pepper if that floats your boat. You can sprinkle bacon bits over the top or mix them into the center.
How do I store these fun deviled eggs?
Store your deviled eggs in an airtight container in the fridge for 1-2 days. I think they start to get a little funky after that.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy this recipe and that it's a huge hit at whatever party you attend.
