I'm so excited to share this Easy Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs recipe with you. If you've never used the Instant Pot 5-5-5- Method, prepare to have your mind blown. 🤯 This is seriously the easiest way to make perfect hard boiled eggs every time!
I love hard boiled eggs, but if I'm totally honest with you, every attempt I made to hard boil eggs ended in disaster. Seriously.
Hard boiled eggs are one of my go-to snacks, and I'm slightly obsessed with egg salad, but I always make my hubby make the hard-boiled eggs for them because they turn out horrible when I make them.
Seriously the egg yolks would either be overly cooked and have a green ring around the edges or the egg whites would be super runny.
I tried every method possible too. I tried starting with cold water and then getting up to boiling water and then putting them in a cold water bath. I tried adding the eggs to hot water. I adjusted the cook time. I tried less time…and more time…and still, the perfect boiled egg eluded me.
When I started hearing rumors on the internet that you could make hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot, I didn't get too excited…because I figured it would be like every other hard boiled egg method I tried…a disaster.
But, I was wrong!
The 5-5-5 Hard Boiled Egg method makes it easy to get perfectly cooked, easy-to-peel hardboiled eggs every single time! These perfect eggs are great to have on hand when you meal prep as they're a yummy addition to salads. They're also a great quick breakfast. Just peel off the egg shells and you've got breakfast!
Instant Pot Hard Boiled Egg Ingredients
- 1 dozen eggs ( I use large eggs or extra-large eggs)
- Water
- Ice
And while this goes without saying, I'm saying it anyway. You'll also need an Instant Pot (or some other electric pressure cooker).
How To Make Hard Boiled Eggs in Your Instant Pot
You'll want to start by washing and drying your eggs.
Now pour 1 cup of water into the bottom of your Instant Pot.
Next place all of your eggs in the bottom of your Instant Pot using either a trivet, steamer basket or egg rack. Do not stack your eggs on top of each other as your eggs will NOT come out perfectly if you do this.
Now close your Instant Pot and use the manual high pressure setting to set the cooking time for 5 minutes. It will take a little time to pressurize and heat up and then it will start the 5-minute cooking countdown.
Once your eggs are cooked, you'll want to let the pot naturally release for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, use the manual release to release the rest of the pressure. Be careful when you do this as a lot of steam will be released quickly.
During the 5 minutes you're waiting after your eggs are cooked and are doing the natural release thing, but before you use the manual release, you'll want to fill up a large bowl (big enough to hold all your eggs) with water and some ice to create an ice bath for your eggs.
After you've manually released the pressure, you'll want to immediately move the eggs from the instant pot into the cold water. You'll want to use tongs son that you don't burn yourself on the super warm eggs.
Leave eggs in the ice water bath for 5 minutes!
Store…or peel and serve.
What Is The Instant Pot Hard Boiled Egg 5-5-5 Method?
The 5-5-5 Method makes it easy to remember how to cook the perfect hard boiled egg in your Instant Pot EVERY. SINGLE. TIME!
- Pressure cook eggs for 5 minutes.
- Let pressure naturally release for 5 minutes before using the manual release.

Easy-peasy! The yolks on these eggs come out perfectly yellow and fluffy every time! And don't even get me started on how easy it is to peel the eggs.
Frequently Asked Questions
While I've always heard that older eggs are easier to peel, these instant pot eggs are easy to peel every time! The only caveat to this is that I have found farm fresh (as in laid that day eggs) do not work as well as farm fresh eggs that have been in the fridge for a week.
When I was in Ukraine, our translator taught me that if you roll a hard boiled egg between your hands while running it under cold water, your eggs shells will easily come off leaving you with perfect hard boiled eggs every time! And it worked surprisingly well…even with eggs that aren't cooked as well as these.
I like to store them in an airtight container in the fridge. I've also been known to throw them back in the carton they came out of since we go through them quickly.
Honestly, I can't tell the difference, so just use the eggs you like the most.
Yes, you can. While I think the hard boiled eggs turn out better if you use a trivet or steamer basket (they're less likely to form microcracks from rolling around in the boiling water), they'll still be fine if you don't have a rack.
