The Power of Moms {Indiana Blogger Roundtable with Lt. Governor Becky Skillman}

I'm not one of those people who's really into politics, but I believe strongly that every single person has the ability to impact their community and the people around them! And on Wednesday, an amazing group of powerful women who are impacting their families, their communities, and for some of them…the world all converged on the Indiana Statehouse to meet with Lt. Governor Becky Skillman.  (Don't worry, we were invited).

I have to admit, these type of meetings bring out all my insecurities and social awkwardness.  I wonder if I'll make a fool of myself, what I'll say to the other “cool” bloggers, what we'll talk about and more.  Every time I head into a blog conference or meet up with bloggers, I always call my husband and say “Please pray that I won't be totally socially awkward.”  The Blogger Roundtable with the Lt. Governor was  no exception.  I was totally nervous…only to find out there was no need to be.  These women were friendly and kind and gracious.  The people in the Lt. Governor's office were warm and welcoming.  And the Lt. Governor was so approachable and down to earth that I felt immediately at ease.

Our roundtable discussion kicked off with introductions around the room.  There was a diverse group of women and blogs represented.  It's been so fun these past 2 days visiting some of their blogs and I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of them this weekend.

The actual roundtable discussion only lasted 45 minutes by the time we made it through introductions, but I'm pretty sure we all would have stayed for 2 or 3 more hours.  The Lieutenant Governor shared a little bit of her history in politics. (Did you know she is the first elected female Lt. Governor in Indiana?) She also shared about finding balance as a working mom (a flexible schedule and a family who live nearby are key) and told a story of watching her son slide down the courthouse banisters outside her office.

Conversation was lively in the room as the Lt. Governor and my fellow bloggers discussed agriculture, school lunches, internet and telecommunication infrastructures, food allergies, and bipartisan politics.  I was so impressed with Lt. Governor Becky Skillman's ability to cite statistics, reference recent news stories, and motivate us moms to be the voice of change in our communities. I'm pretty sure that if we had a few more hours together, we could have solved the problems in most of our communities…if not the entire state.  🙂

I'm so thankful for the opportunity to not only meet the Lt. Governor, but to also meet so many amazing women who represented various corners of the state and various genres of mom blogging! I only wish I could have spent more time getting to know the other bloggers.  If you were there and we didn't meet, I apologize and I hope we'll get to meet soon.
