I love a good road trip! If you know me well, you know it's not unusual for me to hop in the car or pile my whole family including the dogs in the car for a spur of the moment road trip.

Whether you’re looking for an epic cross-country journey or just a quick weekend getaway, make sure that you’ve taken care of all the necessary preparations. While you don't have to do every single one of these things to have a safe and enjoyable road trip, it's definitely helpful to check off as many things as possible. Also, keep in mind that the length of your road trip, where you are traveling to and who is traveling with you can affect what you need to prioritize.
Tune Up Your Vehicle
Before embarking on any journey, it is important to ensure that your vehicle is in top condition. If you're heading out on a long trip, make sure to get your oil changed and have any outstanding repairs taken care of.
You also may want to consider getting a tune-up if your vehicle is due for one soon. It’s much better to be safe than sorry when it comes to car maintenance, so don’t skip out on this important step!
Check Your Fluid Levels
Whether you're heading out on a short or long trip, you'll want to be sure to check your fluid levels. Check your oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid, and gas levels to make sure your car is good to go.
Check Your Tires
If you're heading out on a road trip, it's a great idea to do a visual inspection of your tires. We've had so much construction craziness since Hurricane Ian, that I've found multiple nails and screws in my tires. It's much easier to fix a tire with a screw in it than to wait on the side of the road with a flat tire only to still end up fixing the tire with a screw in it. 🙂
Check Your Windshield Wipers
If your windshield wipers are streaking or not clearing the windshield as well as they used to, it’s time to replace them. Another sign of wiper wear is if you can hear squeaking or chattering while they are in use. Additionally, if they have been in service for more than six months, it may be time to consider replacing them with a new set.
Pack an Emergency Kit
No matter where you’re headed or how long your trip may be, it’s always best to come prepared for anything that life might throw at you. A basic emergency kit should include items such as jumper cables, flares or reflective triangles, flashlights with extra batteries, and a first aid kit. Additional items such as water and non-perishable snacks can also come in handy in case of emergencies or unexpected delays along your route.
Pack a First Aid Kit
A first aid kit for your car should include adhesive bandages in assorted sizes, tweezers, safety pins, a thermometer, pain relievers, anti-allergy medication, antiseptic wipes and creams, a cold pack or hot water bottle, medical tape, scissors and a CPR mask.

Additionally, try not to overload yourself by planning too many stops in one day; making sure that everyone gets adequate rest throughout the journey is key!
