Being a parent is hard. And being a parent to a teen can sometimes feel impossible. As a mom of 5, I've already gone through the teen years three times. My twins are currently 14, and I'm in the midst of the teen years with them right now.
I learned a lot through trial and error, but I recently learned about a resource that can help you avoid some of the trials and errors along the way. Oh how I wish I had known about the Center for Parent and Teen Communication years ago. The CPTC provides science-based strategies to support healthy family relationships.
The Center for Parent and Teen Communication even has a Daily Parenting Newsletter that provides great parenting tips in just 100 words!
I absolutely loved this animation on Spotting Teens Strengths.
In a world where teens are constantly on the receiving end of criticism and negative attention, pointing out their strengths can be empowering. When you spend time looking for what your teen does well and then you relay that information to them, you encourage them to continue to hone those special skills.
One of my teens has amazing perseverance and discipline, and I regularly compliment them on that skill. I tell them how that will help them in the real world. When we encourage our teens to use their strengths, we help them reach their fullest potential!
