I'm a spender! I like spending money and I naturally stink at saving money. As a child, any time I had money, it burned a hole in my pocket. As an adult, it wasn't much better.
While I love the idea of saving money and know it's really good for me, it's something I struggled with for a long time…and if I'm honest, sometimes I still struggle with it.
But…I have a few tips that have helped tremendously. So I thought I'd share these How To Save Money Tips for the rest of you who struggle with saving!
How To Save Money Tips
1. Start Small
If you're not a natural saver, it may seem like you don't have any money to set aside for saving. The truth is, you can start saving by just putting a penny aside today. A few years ago, I created this 365 Day Savings Challenge Printable and decided to take the challenge!
I was amazed at how quickly I was able to save over $600! It was the perfect jumping off point for a savings challenged person because I only had to save one penny the first day, an additional 2 pennies the second day and so on and so forth.
While I started off by just putting 1 penny in my jar, I quickly decided to empty my purse at the end of each day and put that amount of change in my jar. I ended up checking off random amounts each day and once my jar started filling, I started adding extra money whenever I had the chance…just because I liked seeing that I was actually saving money!
Over the last year, over 100,000 people have downloaded my 365 Day Savings Challenge Printable, so I know I'm not the only one who was looking for a quick and easy way to save money!
2. Automate your savings
Once upon a time, I read this advice and set up a certain percentage of my income to go into a savings account. The problem was that this savings account was tied to my checking account and I kept spending it. {See…I told you this didn't come naturally.} After a while, I just gave up on trying to save. Then I heard about Digit.
Here's how it works:
You sign up for a Digit account (it's just your name and email address) and then connect it to your bank account. Once it's connected, Digit checks your spending patterns and moves a few dollars from your checking account to your Digit account every few days if you can afford it.
Check out this quick video:
It really is soooo easy to use digit! And your Digit account is backed by the FDIC! Pretty sweet, huh?!?
I highly recommend Digit. It takes amounts that are small enough that you barely notice, but it adds up in your Digit account surprisingly quickly! Digit is also a great way to save extra money for Christmas presents or special occasions! When you're ready to use your money, just withdrawal it from your digit account and it will be back in your original checking account the next day!

3. Make a Plan
I'm not a big fan of debt. And while sometimes I'm really tempted to buy things on credit, I always feel better when I pay cash for things! Whenever I want something badly and set a goal to pay cash for it, I'm amazed at how easy it is to come up with the money.
Whether you're saving for Christmas, a vacation, a house or retirement, write down a list of all the reasons you're saving and why you don't want to go into debt for these things and then post this list somewhere you can see it often! When you're tempted to spend money on something frivolous rather than saving for Christmas, look at your list. You may need to make your list the screen saver or lock screen on your phone so it's a constant reminder! 🙂
