When I was growing up, there were certain things my parents said over and over and over again. Every day when we said goodbye to my dad before going to school, he told us to “Do some brilliant work!”
And that one time (I’m sure it was only once) that I talked back to my mom, she said “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.”
While I didn’t think much of it at the time, I realize now, that those are the mottos that shaped our lives. And they are the mottos that are shaping the lives of my children!
When I asked my oldest daughter what some of our family mottos are, she immediately responded with “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.” I smiled because as the mom of 4, I’ve said that more times than I want to admit! 🙂 Just like my mom said it to us more times than she wants to admit!
And when my son broke my iPad and burst into tears, I told him the same thing my parents always told me, “People are more important than things.”
And while I don’t tell my kids to “Do some brilliant work” nearly as often as my dad told me, I continue to do brilliant work to this day! 🙂
If you’ve ever watched Bringing Up Bates, you know that it’s loaded with family mottos like “Popsicles and Band-Aids are the universal fix for any problem.” And if you’re a parent, you know that it’s pretty much the truth!
The thing I really appreciate about the Bates family is that they live by their values! They also have great quotes about encouragement, family and love.
Some of the quotes are practical, like Nathan’s “Duct tape is always important.”
I’m sure MacGuyver would agree, Nathan!
Some of them are more profound, like Gil’s quote “I don’t know what’s in the future, but I know Who holds the future… and I’m looking forward to what He’s going to deliver.” This is a quote that really resonates with me!!!
