On that morning, we woke up early to head to the airport so we could fly to Ukraine to adopt our daughter Khrystyna who was 9 at the time. While we were there, we met our daughter Amina (who was just about to turn 12) and adopted her as well.
Coming home with 2 kids was expensive…but there were other expenses that we never fathomed when we decided to adopt.
While we were in Ukraine, we met our daughter Khrystyna’s biological brother. He was 20 at the time and he really wanted to attend college. My husband and I both agreed that any family of Khrystyna’s was now our family as well…and as such we had a responsibility to help him in any way we could.
Over the next few years, we regularly sent money to help him with expenses for college and living expenses. When he got married, we sent money to congratulate him. When his wife was pregnant and they needed extra money for prenatal care, we sent them money. And when their sweet baby girl was born, we sent them money to help with expenses.
We sent money to help them move to a safer city. We were even able to pay for Khrystyna’s biological mom to have a surgery that would enable her to walk after an injury left her unable to walk.
While many people have wondered why we would send money to people we barely know, the answer is this…they’re our family now too. And while it’s true we don’t know them well, one of the ways that we show love to our daughter is to take care of her biological family.
