Tomorrow is the last day of school for my girls and I am so thrilled…but not for the reasons you may think. While I’m glad to have my girls home more and to be able to take some fun trips, I’m super excited about not having to drive them to school.
The girls go to a great school that is about 7 minutes from our house, but early last week as I headed to school, I was met with barricades on the road that leads up to the school. They closed the road to repair the asphalt by the railroad tracks. Seriously, the road was sooo bumpy it made a speed bump look tame! My 7 minute drive turned into a 12 minute drive…each way. Still not bad, but since it’s the end of the year and we have our routine down to a science, it requires extra thinking for everyone to allow for more time.
Then later on last week, I noticed a man with a safety vest putting up no parking signs on one of the other roads we take to school. Friday morning, that was closed to. And while it wasn’t difficult to find an alternate route, it had created some extra traffic which turned my now 12 minute drive into a 16 minute drive. Although tomorrow is the last day of school, with the luck I’ve been having lately, I half expect to wake up tomorrow and find both ends of my street blocked with barricade tape.
While I know that a 16 minute drive isn’t a big deal to many of you, I live in a small town and have gotten used to my easy drives with little traffic. This morning, I avoided the traffic and inconvenience altogether by going a different way to school…by way of the Burger King drive-thru. My kids got Cini-minis and were thrilled…and I avoided traffic and was thrilled!
So tell me…are your kids done school soon? And if so, what are you most looking forward to about the end of school?
Just for the record, although the construction and traffic drives me crazy, the thing I’m most looking forward to is having my kids home and spending some quality time together!
