Looking for a fun DIY gift idea? These Snowman Mugs are one of my favorite crafts in a long time! They were super easy to make and super inexpensive!
Now that the weather has cooled off, we are in hot beverage mode. My hubs and my 16 year old are drinking lots of coffee, my 19 year old is sipping on her tea, and the twins and I are craving hot chocolate and chai lattes.
Our older daughters and my husband and I each have our own mugs and so the twins have asked for their own mugs. Rather than buy something, I thought I’d take the time to create something fun. And when I was finished, I realized these would make great gifts this Christmas…especially when filled with hot chocolate mix and Hershey’s kisses!
I purchased some white mugs and brought them home and washed them. Then I used Sharpie Paint Pens and went to work creating snowmenpeople.
If you use regular sharpies, they will come off when you wash the mugs…even if you bake them in the oven. By using oil-based Sharpies, you can hand wash with soap and water without damaging your artwork. 🙂 Keep in mind, they are NOT dishwasher safe.
I thought about personalizing each of the snowpeople with the twins’ names, but decided I’d just create a snowgirl for Shayna and a snowboy for James. Once I finished painting, I baked the mugs to help set the paint. The Snowman Mugs turned out sooooo cute!!!!
After they were completely cooled, we took them for a test run! The results…hot chocolate tastes even better in an adorable snowman mug!
How to Make Snowman Sharpie Mugs
1. Purchase mugs.
2. Wash and dry mugs thoroughly.
3. Draw your designs on with Sharpie paint pens (if you’re doing an intricate design, feel free to draw the design in pencil first”
4. Bake for 20 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
5. Let cool completely.
6. Enjoy!

These are so adorable! Thanks for the diy review on how to make these! I did make them once with regular sharpies and bake as was suggested on a high rated blog. Um…..the designs came off after first use. I was so sad. Since then I’ve learned about the oil based pens and they do work!

does it matter if the mugs have a glaze in them before you draw on them with a sharpie??
So cute, we have new twins this year (boy and girl). I bookmarked for next year when they can use a mug.
I’ve made similar mugs with the oil paints and made the mistake by putting them in the dishwasher. FYI The sharpies came off. Love these cute cups.
